TERMINOLOGY

How We Talk

PEACE (Practical Equality, Actioning Change for Everyone

PEACE stands for Practical Equality, Actioning Change for Everyone. There are 3 main features to our name. The first is Practical equality - Practical: an examination or lesson in which theories and procedures learned are applied to the actual making or doing of something. Most of us know what equality is and what it means but how many of us are sure we are putting this into action. This leads us on to the second - Actioning Change – Action: the fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim. The process of creating an anti-racist culture must require actions to be taken for core changes. The third is Everyone: Every person. These actions for change must be undertaken by, and for the benefit of every person regardless of race, status, position etc.

BAME (Black, Asian, Minority ethnic)/ POC (People of Colour):

These are the terms we will use to label ethnic minorities in the UK, we use these terms as they are widely accepted and understood, but they do leave us wanting as they illustrate a gap between White and ‘other’ it also mingles a broad spectrum of different cultures, races and ethnicities into one with very little definition. So when we can, we will use more definitive labels such as Black, South-East Asian, Indigenous people etc.

Anti- racism

When we talk about anti- racism we are talking about the fight against racism, anti-blackness, islamophobia and anti-Semitism.

DEI (Diversity, Equality & Inclusion)

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion are terms more widely used in professional spheres when talking about anti-racism. These terms are common when talking about laws (equality Act 2010).For us, DEI and anti-racism are one and the same.
